September in Málaga is not just the return to routine after summer; it is also grape harvest season. At this time of year, the fields of the province—especially in the Axarquía—come alive with one of the most traditional and festive harvests in Andalusia.

Muscat grapes, the jewel of the Axarquía
The Axarquía, located east of Málaga, is one of Spain’s most renowned wine regions. Its mountainous landscape and Mediterranean climate create the ideal conditions for growing the Muscat of Alexandria grape, the foundation of Málaga’s sweet wines that are famous worldwide. Many of the vineyards are planted on steep slopes, which means the harvest is carried out by hand, just as it was centuries ago. Though demanding, this work is a deeply rooted cultural tradition.
Harvest festivals
The grape harvest is not only agricultural work; it is also a celebration. Throughout September, several towns in Málaga hold festivals blending folklore, gastronomy, and of course, wine:
Grape Harvest Festival in Manilva (first weekend of September): parades, music, and the traditional grape-stomping.
Fiesta de Viñeros in Málaga city (around September 8th): part of the celebration of the Virgin of Victory, with winemakers joining the procession in honor of the region’s winemaking traditions.
Harvest Festival in Mollina (mid-September): focused on wines from the Málaga and Sierras de Málaga denominations of origin, with tastings, food, and cultural activities.
An experience for locals and visitors
Attending one of these festivals is a unique way to connect with Málaga’s identity: history, music, flavors, and customs come together, showing how wine is part of the region’s soul. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to taste local products, discover family-owned wineries, and enjoy the warm hospitality of Málaga’s villages in a festive atmosphere.
Welcome Málaga tip:
If you’re in the city in September, don’t miss the chance to take a day trip to the Axarquía. You’ll enjoy stunning landscapes, taste the famous Muscat wine, and maybe even join one of these traditional festivities.
