The Ultimate Checklist Before Moving to Málaga

Moving to Málaga can be one of the best decisions of your life: great weather, quality of life, the sea, and a growing international community.

But there’s one thing that makes the difference between a chaotic arrival… and a smooth transition: preparation.

That’s why we’ve created this ultimate checklist to help you stay on top of everything before you pack your bags.

1. NIE and visa (your starting point)

Before settling in Spain, you need to clarify your legal status.

Depending on your nationality, you may need:

  • NIE (Foreigner Identification Number)

  • Visa (if applicable: digital nomad, work, study, etc.)

Key tip: Start this process early. Getting appointments can take weeks.

2. Accommodation (temporary vs. permanent)

One of the biggest mistakes is trying to secure housing from abroad without understanding the market.

Options:

  • Temporary accommodation (recommended for the first few weeks)

  • Mid- or long-term rental

Key tip: Book 2–4 weeks of temporary accommodation so you can search calmly once you arrive.

3. Health insurance

In Spain, having health coverage is mandatory in many situations (especially for visa applications).

Options:

  • Public healthcare (if you are contributing to the system)

  • Private insurance (fast and common among expats)

Key tip: Make sure your policy meets immigration requirements.

4. Spanish bank account

Having a Spanish bank account makes almost everything easier: rent, bills, administrative processes…

What you’ll usually need:

  • NIE or passport

  • Address in Spain

  • Proof of income (in some cases)

Key tip: Some banks allow you to open accounts as a non-resident—research this before arriving.

5. Spanish phone number

Essential for:

  • Receiving calls from landlords or agencies

  • Confirming administrative appointments• Managing services

Key tip: You can get a local SIM card at the airport or in official stores around the city.

6. Empadronamiento (local registration)

The empadronamiento is your official registration at the local town hall.

You’ll need it for:

  • Accessing public services

  • Administrative procedures

  • School enrollment (if moving with family)

Key tip: Do it as soon as you have a fixed address.

Bonus: Have your documents ready

In a competitive market like Málaga, being prepared makes all the difference.

Have ready:

  • ID

  • NIE

  • Employment contract or proof of income

  • References (if available)

Key tip: Keep everything both in digital and printed format.

Recommended strategy for a stress-free move

If you’re coming from abroad, this is what works best:

  1. Arrive with temporary accommodation

  2. Set up your phone and bank account

  3. Visit properties in person

  4. Secure your rental

  5. Register your address (empadronamiento)

Simple—but very effective.
