The “Muy Hospitalaria” exhibition is a cultural and historical display that highlights one of Málaga’s most meaningful —and lesser-known— historical events: the city’s solidarity following the shipwreck of the German frigate Gneisenau at the beginning of the 20th century.

Set in a central and symbolic location, the exhibition offers a chance to discover Málaga’s welcoming and humanitarian spirit, values that still define the city today.
A historical event that shaped the city
In December 1900, the German frigate Gneisenau was shipwrecked off the coast of Málaga during a severe storm. While the tragedy caused great loss, it also revealed the extraordinary response of the local population.
Residents, fishermen and local authorities united to help the survivors, offering shelter, medical assistance and support.
What does the exhibition include?
The exhibition presents the event through:
Informative panels and visual material
Historical photographs
Original documents and testimonies
Contextual explanations
All of this allows visitors to understand not only the historical event itself, but also the impact it had on Málaga’s identity.
Málaga: a welcoming city, yesterday and today
Beyond the historical event, the exhibition conveys a very contemporary message: Málaga has always been a city open to the world.
Today, this spirit of hospitality is reflected in the way the city welcomes people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds: expatriates, international students, digital nomads, and families who choose Málaga as their new home.
A recommended visit for residents and newcomers
“Muy Hospitalaria” is a particularly interesting visit for:

It is a simple and approachable way to connect with the true essence of the city.
