Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in Málaga: What You Need to Know

The city of Málaga has implemented a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) " Zona de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE)" its urban center as part of its commitment to sustainability, improving air quality, and reducing traffic.

Where is the LEZ in Málaga?

The LEZ mainly covers the historic center and surrounding areas, where access to private traffic was already limited. Vehicles wishing to drive in these areas must meet environmental requirements based on the Spanish DGT (Traffic Authority) environmental label.

Which cars can enter?

Access depends on the environmental label:

  • Zero emissions (blue): access allowed without restrictions.

  • ECO (green & blue): access allowed under flexible conditions.

  • C (green) and B (yellow): partial restrictions depending on time and residency.

  • No label: generally not allowed, except for very specific cases (e.g., residents or service vehicles).

If you’re coming from abroad, it’s important to check how your foreign vehicle corresponds to the Spanish DGT labels.

Getting around alternatives

  • Public car parks around the center, with easy walking access to the historic district.

  • Public transport: Málaga has a network of buses, metro, and commuter trains.

  • Sustainable mobility: bicycles and e-scooters are increasingly popular.

Welcome Málaga practical tips

  • Check access rules before driving into the historic center, especially with a foreign car.

  • Apply for your environmental label if you don’t have it yet. It’s mandatory and helps with city access.

  • Consider car-free options: often it’s more convenient to park outside and move around on foot or by public transport.

At Welcome Málaga, we help you with everything related to your vehicle in Spain: from requesting your DGT environmental label to understanding local traffic rules. Our goal is for you to enjoy Málaga stress-free, without worrying about fines or complicated procedures.
