Just steps away from Málaga’s lively city center and near the waterfront promenade lies one of the city’s most unique and tranquil places: the English Cemetery of Málaga. Surrounded by Mediterranean gardens and centuries-old tombs, this site is much more than a burial ground — it’s a living testament to history, culture, and multicultural harmony.

The First Protestant Cemetery on the Iberian Peninsula
Opened in 1831, the English Cemetery was the first Protestant cemetery in Spain. Until then, non-Catholics could not be buried in consecrated ground, a situation that deeply affected the growing British and foreign community in Málaga.
Thanks to the efforts of British Consul William Mark, land was granted on Málaga’s eastern hillside to allow dignified Protestant burials. Since then, it has become a symbol of religious tolerance and cultural diversity.
A Romantic Garden by the Sea
Far from gloomy, the English Cemetery is a botanical garden full of charm, with cypress trees, bougainvillea, roses, and exotic plants surrounding engraved headstones, sculptures, and artistic mausoleums. Its peacefulness and beauty make it ideal for strolling or quiet reflection.
Notable Graves and Stories
Among those buried here are well-known figures from literature and history, such as:
Gerald Brenan, British writer and author of The Spanish Labyrinth
Gamel Woolsey, poet and Brenan’s wife
Jorge Guillén, Spanish poet of the Generation of '27
Prominent members of Málaga’s foreign colony from the 19th and 20th centuries
Every grave tells a story of life, travel, and cultural connection.
A Living Cultural Space
The cemetery is now managed by a foundation that hosts guided tours, poetry readings, concerts, and temporary exhibitions. Visitors can also explore the Anglican chapel and interpretation center, which shares the site's history and its ties to Málaga’s international past.
